Frequently asked questions

Are safe deposit boxes insured?

Yes – most safety deposit boxes come with a minimum of £10,000 complimentary insurance. You get the same when you sign up for any of our boxes.

We do not need to know what you keep in your box, nor do the insurance company ask for an inventory.

You would, however, need some evidence in the very unlikely scenario of making a claim. It is, therefore, a good idea to do a few things regularly when you have anything of value stored:

  • Get your items valued – particularly if they appreciate in value
  • Take photos of what you are keeping in storage
  • Keep the valuation and receipts separate from the goods

If you store items you frequently use, such as watches and rings, and need insurance when wearing them to special occasions, you can buy additional cover. Up to £100,000 is available at Ellerton Knight.  Before you spend extra money on extended cover, check your home contents policy.

Please note: Cash is insured inside the centre but is excluded in cover outside the vault (known as wear cover). Understand the insurance terms and conditions so any claim is indemnified.
