How Many Names Can Be on a Safety Deposit Box?

Jun 29, 2022

When you have a safety deposit box, it’s important to ensure that someone can access it on your behalf, similar to sending someone to pick up pizza for you.

In the past, banks did not offer this option, but now private centres like Stonewall Vaults make it possible.

As a customer, you can add up to four additional names to your safety deposit box account, with the primary renter having the highest level of privilege.

Each additional user costs £25.

Before adding someone, consider the cost of producing additional keys, as most centres charge a fee for this service.

At Stonewall Vaults, we charge £25 per additional key, paid to the key manufacturer.

Once the key is made, we conduct necessary checks and collect the user’s biometrics before assigning them to your safety deposit box account.

A customer can only have a total of four names as we are only able to provide two more keys in addition to the two given to you when you signed up.

It’s important to think about the risk of joint ownership.

Safety deposit centres do not have access to your box’s content or regulate how customers access their items.

If you add someone to your box and fall out with them, you can disable their access by contacting the centre.

Similar to when you requested to add a joint owner, it will help if you put your request in writing so that your customer record can be updated accordingly.

Still, there may be concerns that the joint owner, who has their own keys and knows the box number, can sign up as a new customer and gain access to your box.

In such cases, escalating the situation and contacting the centre to deactivate their access is a necessary first step.

You can also change your box number

Contacting the safety deposit box centre to change your box number is an extreme measure, but it can provide added security.

Keep in mind that you may need to go through the registration process again and return the keys to your existing box.

If you cannot produce the complete keys, you may not receive your refundable key deposit, and the money will be used to replace your existing keys.

Our team at Stonewall Vaults continuously updates our service to address security loopholes promptly and responsibly. We also welcome customers wanting to add names to their safety deposit box accounts.
